2007 BMW 328XI Complaints and Recall Information

The 2007 BMW 328XI has 4 complaints and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report smoke and burning odors inside the cabin while driving, as well as issues with the vehicle stalling or dying out. Several complaints mention delays in obtaining parts needed for recall repairs.

Common Issues

  • Recall repair delays. Owners report that parts required for certain recall repairs have been unavailable for extended periods, preventing timely resolution of safety issues.
  • Smoke inside cabin. Drivers experience smoke and a burning odor entering the vehicle cabin around 25 MPH, accompanied by smoldering sounds from the dashboard area.
  • Overheating after shutdown. Even after turning the vehicle off, heat and smoke persist and may increase until the battery is disconnected.
  • Stalling problems. Vehicles have been reported to die out unexpectedly and become undriveable.

There are five recalls affecting various systems, mainly concerning air bag inflators, occupant classification sensors, and the electrical wiring related to the heating and air conditioning system. The affected recalls involve safety-critical components that present risks of air bag malfunction, fire, or injury due to defects.

Recalls

  • Occupant classification sensor defect. (NHTSA Campaign 13V564000) Roughly 76,565 vehicles affected including the 2007 328XI. The passenger seat occupant detection mat may fatigue and crack, causing the air bag system to deactivate improperly. Failure increases injury risk in a crash. BMW issued owner notifications and will repair the sensor free of charge once parts are available.
  • Driver air bag inflator explosion risk. (NHTSA Campaign 24V513000) Approximately 394,029 vehicles affected covering 2006-2011 3 Series models. Air bag inflators may explode during deployment, sending sharp metal fragments into the cabin and causing severe injury or death. Dealers will inspect and replace air bag modules at no cost. Owner letters were mailed August 2024.
  • Interim driver air bag inflator defect. (NHTSA Campaign 20V017000) About 59,965 vehicles affected including 2007 328XI. The inflators contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate that degrades over time and can explosively rupture. BMW will replace the driver air bag or inflator free of charge with owner notifications ongoing since 2020.
  • Electrical wiring overheating. (NHTSA Campaign 17V676000) 702,965 vehicles affected including the 2007 328XI. Wiring and connectors for heating and air conditioning airflow control may overheat, potentially melting connectors and increasing fire risk even when parked. BMW plans to replace wiring and connectors free of charge, with notifications ongoing.

Owners facing repeated repairs, delayed recall remedies, or safety defects in the 2007 BMW 328XI may want to consult their state’s lemon law resources to understand their legal rights regarding vehicle replacement or reimbursement.
