2018 BMW 328D Complaints and Recall Information
The 2018 BMW 328D has 3 complaints and 3 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report sudden engine shutdowns and stalling while driving at highway speeds. One complaint involved a failure related to the fuel system that prevented the vehicle from restarting.
Common Issues
- Engine stalling. Owners report the vehicle shutting off unexpectedly while driving at speeds around 50-65 MPH, causing loss of power and safety concerns.
- Fuel pump failure. Complaints describe a defective fuel pump that caused metal shards to spread into the fuel system components including the fuel rail and injectors, resulting in permanent engine failure.
- Check engine warning light. Illumination occurs in conjunction with drivability issues, signaling engine or fuel system malfunctions.
There are three recalls involving critical diesel fuel system components, emission controls, and engine cooling elements. These recalls address defects with risks of engine stalls and potential fire hazards.
Recalls
- High-pressure fuel pump (21V586000). Affects 11,216 vehicles from model years 2014-2018 including the 328d. The fuel pump may fail, causing engine stalls while driving which increases crash risk. Dealers will replace the pump free of charge.
- EGR cooler leak (21V907000). Covers 50,404 diesel vehicles from 2013-2018. Internal leaks allow coolant to mix with soot, possibly causing smoldering particles and melting the intake manifold which raises fire risks. Dealers replace the EGR cooler and inspect or replace the intake manifold as needed at no cost.
- EGR valve and cooler (18V755000). Involves 44,368 vehicles from 2013-2018. Leaking EGR coolers may cause coolant and soot to mix, leading to intake manifold melting and fire hazards. Repairs include cooler replacement and intake manifold replacement if damage is detected, performed free of charge.
Owners facing repeated breakdowns, unresolved recall repairs, or safety defects might have rights under lemon law provisions in their state. Consulting a qualified attorney for advice on potential claims may be warranted.

FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 328d, 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon, 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d, 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV, and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV diesel vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. The EGR cooler may leak internally, causing coolant to mix with diesel engine soot, which could result in smoldering particles and a melting intake manifold.
Risk: A melting intake manifold increases the risk of a fire.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE)
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.
Risk: The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.
