2010 BLUE BIRD MICRO BIRD Complaints and Recall Information

The 2010 BLUE BIRD MICRO BIRD has 0 complaints and 8 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to adaptive mobility equipment, specifically wheelchair lifts. These recalls address defects that could affect the safety and operation of the wheelchair lifts installed on the buses.

There are eight recalls involving this vehicle, primarily impacting the adaptive mobility equipment system. The recalls cover defects in wheelchair lift restraint belts, software controls, mechanical components, and platform safety, among other concerns.

  • Restraint belt defect. Certain 2008-2011 models with Ricon S or K series wheelchair lifts may have restraint belts that appear latched but are not fully engaged, allowing the lift to operate unsafely with an occupant on board. (NHTSA 10V133000, 1622 vehicles)
  • Lift "up" software issue. The "up" function on specific Ricon wheelchair lifts in 2010 models may overrun the floor level cutoff by about one second if the switch is released early, posing a tip and fall hazard. (NHTSA 10V136000, 569 vehicles)
  • Roll stop latch problem. Buses from 2009-2011 with Braun Vista-2 wheelchair lifts risk latches bending or misaligning, allowing wheelchair occupants to fall from elevated platform positions. (NHTSA 12V153000, 125 vehicles)
  • Restraint belt defect (small batch). A smaller group of 2008-2010 Transit bus models with Ricon lifts share the restraint belt latch defect described above. (NHTSA 10V134000, 23 vehicles)
  • Platform side plate cracking. Wheelchair lifts manufactured by Ricon for 2007-2015 models may develop cracks in platform side plates, risking the platform separating and falling when doors open. (NHTSA 14V511000, 90 vehicles)
  • Link arm pivot hole issue. Folding link arms on certain Ricon wheelchair lifts may have oversized pivot holes causing bearing displacement, which can lead to platform mounting failure and potential platform detachment. (NHTSA 15V730000, 5114 vehicles)
  • Link arm pivot hole issue (transit buses). The same link arm and bearing problem affects a subset of transit buses from 2007-2011 and related models, raising similar risks of platform failure. (NHTSA 15V731000, 90 vehicles)
  • Platform side plate cracking (large batch). A large group of 2007-2011 Micro Bird and other bus models face platform side plate cracking with risks identical to the 14V511000 recall. (NHTSA 14V510000, 5114 vehicles)

Owners facing repeated repairs or unresolved issues related to these recalls may want to review their rights under state lemon laws. Persistent safety defects involving wheelchair lifts warrant close attention to recall remedies and repair histories.

Blue Bird Body Company (Blue Bird) is recalling certain model year 2007-2015 All American and Vision and 2007-2011 Micro Bird transit buses equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts manufactured January 1, 2006, to August 25, 2014 by the Ricon Corporation. The affected lifts are equipped with folding link arms that may have pivot holes that are too big, allowing the bearings to move out of position.

Risk: If the bearings move out of position, the stowed platform may have excessive movement resulting in failure of the platform mounting. This failure could cause the wheel chair lift platform to fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, increasing the risk of injury for the lift operator.

EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY

BLUE BIRD HAS NOTIFIED NHTSA ABOUT A DEFECT IN CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010 ALL AMERICAN, CONVENTIONAL, AND MICRO BIRD SCHOOL BUSES MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 24 THROUGH NOVEMBER 14, 2009 EQUIPPED WITH CERTAIN RICON S SERIES AND K SERIES L-MODEL WHEELCHAIR LIFTS. THERE IS A PROBLEM IN THE SOFTWARE THAT CONTROLS THE LIFT'S "UP" FUNCTION. IF THE "UP" SWITCH IS RELEASED BEFORE THE FLOOR LEVEL LIMIT SWITCH IS ACTIVATED, THE LIFT MAY CONTINUE ITS UPWARD TRAVEL FOR APPROXIMATELY 1 SECOND BEFORE STOPPING. THE CONTINUED UPWARD TRAVEL MAY OVERRUN THE FLOOR LEVEL CUT OFF POINT.

Risk: WHEN THE PLATFORM OVERRUNS THE VEHICLE FLOOR LEVEL AND STOPS AT AN ANGLE FROM 15-20 DEGREES, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR A PERSON IN A WHEELCHAIR TO TIP OVER AND FOR SOMEONE STANDING ON THE PLATFORM TO FALL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN INJURIES.

EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY

BLUE BIRD HAS NOTIFIED NHTSA ABOUT A DEFECT IN CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008 THROUGH 2011 ALL AMERICAN, CONVENTIONAL, AND MICRO BIRD SCHOOL BUSES MANUFACTURED FROM DECEMBER 13, 2007 THROUGH JANUARY 18, 2010 EQUIPPED WITH RICON MODEL S OR K SERIES PUBLIC USE WHEELCHAIR LIFTS. THE RESTRAINT BELT ON THESE LIFTS WAS DESIGNED TO PREVENT THE LIFT FROM MOVING, UNLESS THE TONGUE OF THE BELT IS FULLY ENGAGED AND LATCHED IN THE BUCKLE. RICON HAS DISCOVERED, HOWEVER, THAT IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE OPERATOR TO INSERT THE BELT TONGUE INTO THE BUCKLE WITHOUT FULLY ENGAGING THE LATCHING MECHANISM. IN THIS CASE, THE RESTRAINT BELT WOULD APPEAR TO BE LATCHED, AND THE OPERATOR COULD RUN THE LIFT. IF THE RESTRAINT BELT TONGUE IS NOT FULLY ENGAGED INTO THE RESTRAINT BELT BUCKLE, AND LATCHED, THE LIFT MAY OPERATE WITH AN OCCUPANT ON THE PLATFORM.

Risk: THE USER OF THE LIFT COULD BE INJURED SHOULD THE LIFT MOVE WITHOUT THE RESTRAINT BELT PROPERLY BUCKLED.
