Recalls
  • Wheelchair lift restraint belt. NHTSA recall 10V133000 affects 1622 vehicles. The restraint belt on Ricon S or K series lifts may appear latched without fully engaging, allowing the lift to operate unsafely. This poses an injury risk to users. Blue Bird and Ricon provide warning decals and training aids as a remedy. The recall started April 27, 2010.
  • Roll stop latch misalignment. NHTSA recall 12V153000 applies to 125 vehicles with Braun Vista-2 lifts. Roll stop latches can bend or misalign over time, allowing occupants to overcome the latch and potentially fall from elevated lifts, risking injury. Repairs will be done free of charge by authorized Braun dealers. The recall began April 26, 2012.
  • Wheelchair lift restraint belt. NHTSA recall 10V134000 covers 23 transit buses. Similar to recall 10V133000, restraint belts may not fully latch, allowing unsafe lift operation with an occupant on the platform. Blue Bird works with Ricon for remedies including warning decals and training aids. The recall began April 27, 2010.
  • Platform side plate cracking. NHTSA recalls 14V511000 and 14V510000 affect 90 and 5114 vehicles respectively. The platform side plates on certain Ricon wheelchair lifts may crack, causing the platform to separate and fall when doors open. Owners must bring vehicles to Ricon dealers for supplemental bumpers or platform replacement. Recalls began October 1, 2014.
  • Folding link arm pivot holes. NHTSA recalls 15V730000 and 15V731000 affect 5114 and 90 vehicles respectively. Pivot holes on folding link arms of Ricon lifts may be oversized, causing bearing displacement and platform mounting failure. This can result in the wheelchair platform falling out when doors open. Inspections and free part replacements are provided. The recall began December 1, 2015.

Owners of 2009 BLUE BIRD MICRO BIRD buses dealing with repeated repairs or unresolved recall issues involving wheelchair lifts may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consumers facing safety defects or ongoing problems should consider legal consultation for guidance on potential claims.

Blue Bird Body Company (Blue Bird) is recalling certain model year 2007-2015 All American and Vision and 2007-2011 Micro Bird transit buses equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts manufactured January 1, 2006, to August 25, 2014 by the Ricon Corporation. The affected lifts are equipped with folding link arms that may have pivot holes that are too big, allowing the bearings to move out of position.

Risk: If the bearings move out of position, the stowed platform may have excessive movement resulting in failure of the platform mounting. This failure could cause the wheel chair lift platform to fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, increasing the risk of injury for the lift operator.

BLUE BIRD HAS NOTIFIED NHTSA ABOUT A DEFECT IN CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008 THROUGH 2011 ALL AMERICAN, CONVENTIONAL, AND MICRO BIRD SCHOOL BUSES MANUFACTURED FROM DECEMBER 13, 2007 THROUGH JANUARY 18, 2010 EQUIPPED WITH RICON MODEL S OR K SERIES PUBLIC USE WHEELCHAIR LIFTS. THE RESTRAINT BELT ON THESE LIFTS WAS DESIGNED TO PREVENT THE LIFT FROM MOVING, UNLESS THE TONGUE OF THE BELT IS FULLY ENGAGED AND LATCHED IN THE BUCKLE. RICON HAS DISCOVERED, HOWEVER, THAT IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE OPERATOR TO INSERT THE BELT TONGUE INTO THE BUCKLE WITHOUT FULLY ENGAGING THE LATCHING MECHANISM. IN THIS CASE, THE RESTRAINT BELT WOULD APPEAR TO BE LATCHED, AND THE OPERATOR COULD RUN THE LIFT. IF THE RESTRAINT BELT TONGUE IS NOT FULLY ENGAGED INTO THE RESTRAINT BELT BUCKLE, AND LATCHED, THE LIFT MAY OPERATE WITH AN OCCUPANT ON THE PLATFORM.

Risk: THE USER OF THE LIFT COULD BE INJURED SHOULD THE LIFT MOVE WITHOUT THE RESTRAINT BELT PROPERLY BUCKLED.
