2023 AUDI Q5 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2023 AUDI Q5 has 7 complaints and 6 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the lane keeping system and collision avoidance system malfunctioning. Some report random activations of the SOS sensor, which remains on and does not turn off. Other complaints include steering wheel noise and an oil burning smell.

Common Issues

  • Lane keeping malfunction. The lane keeping system randomly veers the vehicle into oncoming traffic or out of the driving lane, with one report of the car nearly veering off the road into a sign.
  • Collision avoidance false activation. The collision avoidance system triggers unexpectedly, causing abrupt stops while turning left, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions.
  • SOS sensor failure. The emergency SOS sensor turns on randomly and stays on, raising concerns about airbag deployment and automatic emergency calls in a crash.
  • Steering wheel noise. Steering wheel produces noise even after dealership repairs, with the issue recurring months later.
  • Oil burning smell. Drivers notice an oil burning odor coming from the engine area while driving.
  • Delayed recall remedy. Some vehicles remain idle due to recall repair unavailability despite notification of the defect.

Six recalls affect the 2023 Audi Q5, touching on multiple systems including the electrical propulsion system, engine components, charging cables, and airbag sensors. These recalls address potential fire risks from overheating batteries and charging cables, risk of oil leaks and fire, and airbag deactivation due to faulty seat sensor connections.

Recalls

  • High-voltage battery overheating. (NHTSA Recall 25V080000) Affected 20,201 vehicles. The high-voltage battery may overheat, increasing fire risk. Dealers will install advanced diagnostic software as a final remedy expected in Q2 2025. Owners are advised not to charge the vehicle until repairs. Interim notices were sent in early 2025.
  • Cylinder head cover screws. (NHTSA Recall 25V294000) Affected 89,417 vehicles. Improperly tightened screws can loosen allowing oil leaks and fire risk. Dealers will inspect and replace screws free of charge. Owners notified June 2025.
  • Charging cable overheating. (NHTSA Recall 23V842000) Affected 93,196 vehicles including the Q5. Using the 220V/240V plug at full charge can overheat outlets or charging cables, increasing fire risk. Owners advised to avoid 220V/240V charging until replacement cable with temperature sensor is installed free of charge.
  • Front passenger airbag sensor. (NHTSA Recall 24V251000) Affected 91 vehicles. Loose wiring in the occupant detection system may deactivate the front passenger airbag, increasing injury risk in a crash. Dealers will replace the sensor module free of charge.
  • High-voltage battery overheating. (NHTSA Recall 24V898000) Affected 4,616 vehicles. The battery may overheat causing fire risk. Similar remedy and owner instructions as recall 25V080000. This recall has been superseded by 25V080000.

Owners dealing with repeated malfunctions in safety systems or unresolved recall repairs may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting legal resources could clarify options in case of ongoing defects or risks.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

We have a leased 2023 Audi Q5 that has been to the Audi Service Department twice so far to determine the source of the problem with our SOS sensor, which turns on randomly and now stays on and won't turn off. The first time, on April 23rd, Audi Service did not address the issue because they forgot to. The second time, on April 29th, the Audi Service rep, Kyle Blomberg, reported that the SOS sensor issue may be fixed with a software update coming out later this year. He will speak with the service foreman today for more information. This is a safety issue if the car is ever in an accident, as we are not sure if the airbags will deploy, whether the seat belt tension will be activated, or whether the eCall system will automatically contact emergency services. It's unacceptable for Audi not to deploy an update more expeditiously, as waiting nearly seven months is entirely ludicrous. Please investigate this further.

LANE DEPARTURE: ASSIST

The lane keeping system randomly will malfunction and will veer the car either into oncoming traffic or out of the lane i am driving in. The most recent it tried to veer me off the road completely and into a sign off the road. The vehicle will also sometimes trigger the Audi collision avoidance system randomly. It has done it twice while turning left that the car will come to an abrupt halt for no reason. Both of these concerns can create car accidents if someone is either following closely behind or if the car veers into a different lane. I have reported this to the dealer multiple times and have escalated to Audi corporate. They are unable to replicate the issue, because it happens randomly and say the vehicle is operating within the standard. There have been no warnings or lamps that would indicate that the car has an issue.
