Many times while driving the Audi MMI system which controls all radio/navigation/controls screen will completely shut off and reboot, leaving the screen blank and functionality gone. When researching online many others have reported the same issue, with Audi unable to provide a definitive cause or a fix for the issue. This is a safety issue as it could cause distraction while driving

My 2020 Audi A4 infotainment MMI keeps rebooting and takes over a minute or so to load back. This has been happening recently and i have rebooted the system and followed the Audi/reddit forums to seek any help but no resolution. It seems most of the 2020 Audis are facing similar issues. This issue is concerning and needs immediate attention since I have had instances where i lost backup camera while backing. Losing Navigation Capabilities or backup camera feature while backing up or driving has jeopardized me couple of times since i had to fumble and hit brakes as i was almost handicap momentarily. Audi is aware of this issue and have had issued TSB in 2020 which is attached here, but no recall was ever conducted which they should as this now an industry wide problem. Also, i got to know that S they have issued a 2021 MMI recall affecting over 44k Cars but not 2020, which is very surprising. Based on forums and other users it seems the Firmware version 3243 need an overhaul or even MMI module replacement if firmware update doesn't fix the issue. Request the authority to investigate this known issue for 2020 car line with similar intensity as this a widespread safety hazard. MMIs usually incorporate other modules as well so there is risk for ADAS failures or parking aids. MMI (infotainment), and the dashboard screen will turn off randomly and reboot every 2 minutes. This is incredibly dangerous as it turns all sound off, and driving visuals like directions, and freezes or reboots, not where you last had it but from a different check point. It has happened while I have been backing up and backup camera has rebooted during backup. Parking Collision has also malfunctioned multiple times - but primary issue is the MMI rebooting even while driving on the freeway.

Starting in Feb 2025 my MMI will randomly turn off and eventually turn back on randomly. This happens 10 times in 10min. I can’t drive the car due to it being unsafe. It turns maps off, music, calls, and the dashboard. I’ve found 100’s of other Audi 2020 owners having the exact same issue. The complaints and asking for advice are in a site called Audi world. Type in a4 2020 MMI reboot and you’ll see that it started at the same time for all of us. Around Feb. the dealership scanned and nothing came up, they updated and it hasn’t fixed it. They said they don’t know what’s wrong. Called Audi they said the same. Getting the run around. They did offer to look at it for probably $2000 and said they can’t guarantee they’ll be able to fix it. Please make a recall. Started in Feb and is still occurring. Today it restarted 7 times while idle. Doesn’t matter what you do with or without phone. It turns off then eventually back on.

I have started experiencing issues with the MMI (infotainment system) system rebooting every few minutes. It was very sporadic at first, but now it is at the point where I frequently don't have time to get into the system before it starts the reboot cycle again. When this happens, the screen will go blank for several seconds. Then a message will show for several seconds saying that the system is loading. The system will then try to guide me through several prompts to try to log back into the car's MMI system. Even if I choose "Guest User" I am shown multiple prompts before I get into the system and can use the functions located in the MMI. This can and does happen while driving, while parked, and while backing up. This reboot sequence makes all of the safety features, including collision avoidance and the backup camera inaccessible during this time. Sometimes, the system reboots before I have time to even back out of my driveway. Frequently, I don't have time to sign in or work through the prompts to get to the working system before it starts rebooting again. This issue started in February, 2025, but it was infrequent then. Over the past month, the issue has been persistent with the system rebooting every 5 minutes or less. This is very distracting while trying to drive and takes the driver's attention away from driving. As stated before, it also makes the safety features of the vehicle inaccessible - such as collision avoidance and backup camera.

MMI Constant Rebooting - Follow up My 2020 Audi A4 Quattro's MMI system constantly reboots (~60 seconds), causing the screen to go black/blank. Component Failed: MIB3 infotainment software. This persistent issue leads to reboots and loss of digital display. System available for inspection. Safety Risk: Significant, recurring hazard. Critical safety features are inoperative for ~1 min during reboots, including: Rearview camera (backing/parking safety) Navigation Communication No manual bypass exists; driver loses vital visual information Problem Confirmation: Consistently reproducible. Dealer proposed costly hardware replacement with no guarantee, contradicting manufacturer guidelines for known software issues. Symptoms: continuous black screen, Audi splash, then re-initialization. Problem worsened over weeks. Manufacturer's Knowledge: Extensive owner research (AudiWorld, Reddit) confirms this as a widespread, documented MIB3 software defect for 2020 Audi A4/A5 models. Audi's own Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this: TSB 2069112 (MIB3 improvements) TSB 2067021 (MIB3 malfunctions) These TSBs outline a specific, sequential software update process (e.g., older versions need TSB 2067021 first for TSB 2069112). Other owners successfully resolved rebooting with these updates. This malfunction is analogous to other Audi MIB3 software instabilities, as evidenced by NHTSA Recall Number 22V742 (Audi Campaign Code 91DZ). This recall for 2021-2022 Audi models addresses similar digital display/infotainment failures (e.g., rearview camera loss) via a no-cost software update. This demonstrates Audi's awareness of systemic MIB3 software issues impairing safety. I urge NHTSA to investigate this widespread 2020 Audi A4 issue and compel Audi to issue a recall for a no-cost software update (per TSBs) to all affected owners. More detailed documentation, including dealer records and owner videos, is available upon request as there is limited space to detail here.

Vehicles MMI constantly cycling through reboot - inordinate amount of previous complaints about this exact issue - Dealer advised a min $1040 ($370 to diagnose + $670 new MMI) to diagnose and change MMI console with NO guarantee it will work and that's because: the dealer has not updated MIB2 (aka the MMI) using the instructions on a different bulletin, titled "TSB 2067021 - 91 MIB3: Garage opener/SXM/Online Radio or other malfunctions B129B11, B129C22, B123B13, B123C13, U044700 or B200000" (latest version is from July 27, 2024, they've had 6 revisions), before applying the most recent update. So it looks like, at a minimum, I'm two updates behind (encompassing of course, a ton of intermediate versions). So right there, the dealerships have been failing by not even taking the time to read Audi's own TSBs. The dealership said: they have seen this before and they have seen many leave without resolve May I please be placed on the list of VINs that when all complaints are proven to be true and a recall is issued, I can partake in the MMI update? It truly is dangerous as the entire console shuts down, meaning cameras and system are not available for viewing protection (the minimum safety precautions expected with cameras, etc) Audi needs to recognize this is a widespread issue. It appears that they are picky with who they provide updates to and who they ignore as some owners received an update and while their MMI doesn't function 100%, it doesn't cycle through reboot every 60 seconds.

Vehicle's MMI started rebooting spontaneously from 4th week of June 2025. It happens randomly during drive and while following GPS directions. I strongly believe this being a software glitch and occurring without codes, it is a safety issue. These reboots are very unpredictable and happens constantly. When reported to Audi Dealers, they don't have a solution for it. After reviewing many blogs, and so many drivers are having this particular issue, I have decided to report it to NHTSA. The Audi MMI screen has started shutting off and rebooting then giving errors when trying to reboot. Caused a problem while we were using vehicle navigation in NYC and also lost backup guidance when parallel parking. Also dangerous in that it distracts driver with error messages. This started about two months ago once or twice a day but now happens every 2 to 5 minutes.

I had experienced this problem prior of the center screen/Mimi restarting but typically it used to not be very often maybe once every few weeks. But for the past week it has been happening every 30 seconds to a min. This has caused my backup camera to restart as I am backing up causing me to almost get in an accident. As well as that as I am driving I am constantly having to focus on fixing the MMI and shutting off the volume as whenever it turns back on it plays radio static. I am very disappointed in the way Audi has handled this as I am still below 50,000 miles and they refuse to help. This problem is very frustrating as they don’t even have a 100% fix. Their first option was $598 update which I believe is very unfair considering this only happens to select cars and it’s not like this is an extra feature you’re paying for. The second option they gave was a $5,000 module replacement which is just unbelievable considering this has nothing to do with user fault but rather poor manufacturing. This whole situation is outrageous as I see many other individuals with the same problems and no solutions.

While driving, the infotainment screen (MMI system) randomly reboots without warning. This happens frequently, often multiple times during a single trip. When it restarts, the screen goes black and temporarily disables important functions like the navigation, rear-view camera, audio, and vehicle settings. This poses a safety risk by distracting the driver and making it difficult to safely reverse or park. I brought the vehicle to the dealership, and they confirmed the only solution is to replace the MMI system. However, I’ve seen many other Audi A4 owners online report the exact same issue. Given how widespread this appears to be, I believe this should be addressed as a manufacturer defect rather than a repair cost placed on the owner. There were no warning lights or messages before the screen began to fail.

The MMI spontaneously reboots numerous times while driving. When the reboots happen, the screen goes black and key systems such as the backup camera, rear obstacle detection, and navigation, become unavailable until the reboot completes and the systems reload. Restoring functionality requires user input to get through the loading screens. The issue started in February 2025. There are numerous TSBs (filed with NHTSA) that point to available software updates that should be applied to address infotainment-related issues. This appears to be a widespread issue based on the numerous reports found on user forums online, affecting the same model year vehicles (for multiple examples, refer to [XXX] ). It is also interesting that most of the users experiencing this issue, also report it starting around the same time (Jan/Feb 2025), and they all have similar software versions, and production dates. This should be considered a safety issue, as the reboots can happen in the middle of a reverse parking maneuver, and they render the backup camera and obstacle detection sensors completely inoperative until the system reloads. They also impact safety on the highway, as the reboots completely disable the navigation screens, and require multiple user input to restore, while driving. Started with saying “checking remote access rights,” and then saying I (the key user) hadn’t been signed in for awhile and I needed to re-login. I was dealing with that but now it’s just randomly shutting off while I’m driving….. in a 30 min drive it does it at least once but as many as 4 times. If I’m using my maps from carplay, on a call or using my backup camera it just completely stops and reboots, which takes a min or two before it comes back up. Multiple times I’ve missed turns due to the map going out. It’s dangerous! Took it to the dealer for oil change and mentioned the issue… dealer acted as if it wasn’t a known issue, and said they could charge me the $300? diagnostic hourly rate to take the dash apart and diagnose (bc of course now it’s out of warranty). I called the Audi MMI tech support and they attempted to help me, had to open a ticket for level 2 escalation support…. I waited 3-4 days and then level 2 said they couldn’t help me and I needed to see the dealer. SO frustrating and have noticed SO many others with similar models and same year having the same issue on reddit. Here’s an example…. The infotainment system (MMI) in my 2020 Audi A4, currently running software version 3243, frequently reboots on its own while driving. When this happens during reverse, the rearview camera shuts off and the screen goes black, eliminating all rear visibility and creating a significant safety hazard. Additionally, the reboot causes Apple CarPlay to disconnect mid-drive, resulting in loss of navigation, traffic alerts, and voice directions, which increases driver distraction and risk. The issue occurs without warning lights or error messages—the screen simply goes black and restarts in a few seconds to a few minutes. The problem began a few months ago and has become more frequent over time. While I have not yet had the issue inspected by a dealer, it is widely documented by other 2020 A4/A5.. owners and has been resolved in many cases by updating the MMI software to version 3696. Audi has issued related Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 2078437/1), but no recall or service campaign has been announced. I believe this is a manufacturer defect that poses a safety risk and should be investigated. The affected components remain in the vehicle and are available for inspection upon request.

Audi A4 2020 B9 model MMI "info-system" constantly restarts itself during the drive, regardless of it being connected via Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, or radio. MMI constantly restarts without reason, usually within 1 to 3 minutes. When MMI restarts, the rebooting process takes about another 1 to 3 minutes and prevents access to features such as the back-up camera and prevents safe reversal of the vehicle. Furthermore, the constant rebooting of the MMI interferes with the use of the GPS and audio speaker within the car. Which causes an unnecessary distraction when driving. The problem has been reproduced by self and confirmed by others experiencing the same issue within Audi's support forum. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others due to an unnecessarily high charge required in order to inspect the vehicle. No warning lamps or messages have been initiated prior to the failure or when the failure of the MMI first occurred.

Audi MMI (Muti Media Interface) constantly resets while driving the vehicle. The problem began about 4 months ago. The MMI would reboot very infrequently- about once every couple weeks. However, I took the vehicle in for a routine oil change yesterday and when I received the vehicle back, it now constantly resets as soon as it reboots. If I attempt to click a button (like accepting my user profile) the screen immediately goes black. I believe this poses an extreme safety hazard given it can shut off while in reverse when the back up camera is engaged. It is also very distracting constantly seeing the MMI reboot and shut down as every time it reboots it asks for credentials/PINs/Users etc. Lastly, it's very dangerous because if I'm on a call it tries to constantly kick it over to the Bluetooth (but it doesn't work) so I have to manually put the phone back into speaker mode which is extremely distracting.

This is a known issue in 2020 Audi A4 models in the US. Maps, speed, engine info all disappear while driving repeatedly every 2-3 minutes. Dealer replaced SOS module in the past to remedy related issues, but some months later this is still happening. A technical service bulletin has been issued (TSB 2067021/6 software update) but is not covered by the warranty to my understanding. I believe this is related to the MyAudi system that multiple users per account/vehicle. There is a disconnect with this cloud service and the vehicle itself, an this is driving the error. The MMI (Multi Media Interface) system is the component that failed. It began repeatedly rebooting, making critical features like Apple CarPlay, navigation, audio controls, and the rear-view camera inoperable. The failure became progressively worse after two separate repair attempts, including a software update. The 5F module, which governs infotainment, has been identified by the dealership as the part requiring replacement. Yes, the vehicle and failed component are available for inspection upon request. The malfunction disables the rear-view camera, which is a critical safety feature especially when parking or reversing in tight spaces. It also prevents access to navigation and voice-activated phone controls, which can increase distraction if drivers attempt to manually use a mobile device as a workaround while driving. The constant rebooting also creates visual and audible distractions in the cabin. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by an authorized Audi dealership (Audi of Smithtown). After the initial repair failed to resolve the issue, the dealership attempted the repair a second time. Following further analysis, they recommended a $5,200 repair involving replacement of the 5F module, which supports that they confirmed the problem exists and persists. The issue has been inspected and diagnosed by an authorized Audi dealership (Audi of Smithtown), but there is no mention of inspection by Audi of America, police, or insurance representatives at this time. There were no warning lamps or dashboard messages, but the primary symptom was the MMI system randomly rebooting. Initially, the reboots were occasional, but over time became constant to the point where the system was entirely unusable. This issue was present before the June 5, 2025 service visit and worsened significantly after the second repair attempt on June 21, 2025.

MMI system in the radio. It turns off about every 20 mins and restarts on its own. Maps and directions disappear, causing me to enter the information again. It ends phone calls. It is extremely distracting, especially when I lose my location/directions. I have often times missed my turns. This has been going on for approximately 3 months. I will not let my son or daughter drive this vehicle due to the electrical failure.

The MMI (multimedia interface) will periodically restart during drives, including while the backup camera and other safety systems are active. The restart limits ability to use safety features such as the backup camera or sensors. The system displays a message that states the “user hasn’t been used in an extended period of time” and then the system begins the reboot. This issue first began around February 2025 and has only continued to get worse and more frequent over time. It appears to be related to software changes as nothing else about the vehicle have changed during that time.

Starting in around February the MMI (central computer system) system started rebooting at random times while the car was started. At first, I thought there must be something wrong with just my car. I took it into the dealer, and they said there was nothing they could do about it. I did some research and found many other people are having the same issues (thread has over 550 posts linked at the bottom) with the year model and they all started at the same time. I reached out to Audi International, and they say they've never heard of the issue, it's not widespread and to take it to the dealer (which is clearly a lie given the linked thread), when I took it to the dealer, they said Audi international needs to provide and update. Many people on the thread have been told the same thing by Audi and it is extremely frustrating that it's been 5 months, and they continue to deny anything is wrong. I feel this is a major safety issue due to the fact it is extremely distracting while driving and trying to use maps. I took a ~2-hour drive yesterday and the MMI rebooted around 100 times. The other extremely concerning safety issue is if it reboots while parked or in reverse, you lose the backup camera as well as all the proximity sensors until the car is restarted. I know many people have also filed complaints with the NHTSA and Audi International and I'm hoping with enough people speaking up someone will listen and force Audi to provide a solution. Audi MMI display constantly shuts off and turns back on with a message about this user not being used despite using it everyday. This happens all the time and has been on going for months. It is dangerous when I’m relying on it for navigation. I have not had this issue looked at at an Audi dealership but have read this issue seems to be widespread with 2020 models. The issue is ongoing and only seems to be getting worse.

The entire MMI shuts down anywhere from every 30 seconds to 5-6 minutes. It has to then completely reboot, gives a pop up that “user has not been in vehicle for an extended amount of time” - I tried trouble shooting with Audi care over the phone, re added myself as a registered user with remote rights - makes me type my pin every time this happens. The safety risks are the distraction it takes from driving, especially when I am using it for navigation in an unfamiliar area, often getting lost and flustered and distracted

The MMI (multi-media interface) frequently reboots during driving, resulting in a black screen and the inoperability of key systems such as the backup camera, rear obstacle detection, navigation, and cell phone tethering (for hands-free operation). These reboots require user input, including entering a PIN to log into the user account (if set up) and repeatedly tapping on the MMI, which can be highly distracting while driving. By its very nature, the reboot catches the driver by surprise and requires diverting attention from driving.Typically, this user input is provided while stationary, immediately after starting the vehicle. This issue constitutes a safety concern, as reboots can occur during reverse parking maneuvers, rendering the backup camera and obstacle detection sensors inoperable until the system reloads. Additionally, reboots completely disable the navigation screens and necessitate multiple user inputs to restore functionality, which can be hazardous while driving. Many states have enacted hands-free laws and requirements that mandate the use of dash-mounted systems to comply with these regulations. The reboots render such systems inoperative. Numerous reports on online user forums suggest that this issue is widespread and affects the same model year vehicles. For instance, see [XXX] . The infotainment system reboots at random times. This is a security risk since it often reboots while the backup camera is active. This effectively takes the backup camera offline. The MMI system, which displays navigation and other controls, shuts down and restarts frequently while the car is in motion. The problem occurs at least once every trip, and typically every 10 minutes. In my case, I use Apple CarPlay as my navigation system, and the sudden and unexpected loss of navigation poses serious safety risks to me and others, because I either need to pick up my phone to see the map or make a sudden driving maneuver to correct my course. The incident occurred with two other phones, and even when no phone was connected to the car. And it also happened when another person in my household was driving. So the problem is not phone or driver-dependent. I have not yet brought the car to the Audi dealership for diagnostic service.

1) About two months ago, my 2020 Audi A4's MMI began crashing and rebooting randomly while driving. Most of the time, I had connected my phone via Bluetooth to the MMI, and was playing music from my phone. 2) Once it crashes and reboots, most of the time it would pick up my phone's Bluetooth signal again, and show the music file that is still playing, but there would be no sound from the car's sound system. 3) Even after I park, shut off my car, and restart it, the same problem would persist -- the car recognizes that a music file is playing, but no sound. 4) The frequency and randomness of the incidents picked up as time went along. Sometimes it would not crash for the entire duration of my commute; sometimes it would crash within minutes; sometimes it would crash multiple times. No discernible pattern. 5) Later on, I discovered that the MMI would crash even when I did not have a Bluetooth connection, nor any cord plugged into the car via USB. 6) Between June 19-20, 2025, Niello Audi in Sacramento ran a software update for me. I picked up the car on the afternoon of Friday, June 20, and did not drive it again until Monday, June 23. 7) There was no incident between the morning of Monday, June 23 through the morning of Thursday, June 26. 8) On the evening of [XXX], the MMI crashed and rebooted within one minute of the car starting up, before I had even exited my work garage. 9) On the evening of [XXX], the MMI crashed and rebooted within 10 minutes of the car starting up, with no Bluetooth or hardwire connection to the car at all. The MMI will spontaneously stop working in the middle of driving. The screen goes blank and then after a few seconds starts a reboot. This requires me to engage the touch screen manually. This will happen multiple times during a 20-30 minute drive. I first started noticing the problem a few months ago sporadically , but it is now happening consistently every time I drive. It is potentially a safety issue, as it is very distracting, shuts off navigation and obstacle detection systems. I have found that this is a common problem many people who have similar year and models of Audis are experiencing. I have not yet contacted the dealership, but it seems from reports it may be a software problem.

MMI keeps turning off, at this point it's every few minutes. Message states "The selected user has not been in the vehicle for an extended period ... ", something like that. But if you close out the message my info is still available to log into. I've tried a soft reboot by holding down the volume button, I've tried a factory reset and nothing works. It's getting dangerous because now it shuts off sometimes when I'm going in reverse and the camera is then unavailable. It shuts off when I'm utilizing it for directions via Android Auto. It's annoying and it's ridiculous that I have a luxury vehicle with this kind of issue. It's been going on for over 6 months now and only appears to be getting worse.

The MMI in the car constantly reboots. Started occasionally doing it once a drive, would restart and then go right back to what I was at. Then it would restart multiple times a trip, not going where I was at. If I had music on it would lower the volume it was rebooted to or go to a different song. The screen would also freeze for a few minutes after in being rebooted. Took it to Audi, they installed an “update” now it reboots every 3-5 minutes, causing serious safety concerns with no access to the MMI stystem.

The Audi MMI (Multi Media Interface) system will continually shut down and Reset/reboot while driving. It will happen sometimes 3-4 time within a 20 minute drive. The MMI plays a crucial role in enhancing safety features by providing a user-friendly interface for managing various driver assistance systems and safety-related functions. These include features like emergency calls, roadside assistance, and the integration of driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance assist.

2020 Audi A4 has infotainment system that constantly crashes and reboots. It occurs multiple times on every single drive, disabling maps, music, and all of the infotainment until the reboot completes. This issue did not occur in prior years, likely due to some over the air update. Issue has become more frequent over time and has been experienced by many other owners, does not seem to be hardware related. Only solution so far appears to be paying the dealership hundreds for a software update.

The SOS Emergency Call system error warning appears every time I start the car. This system no longer functions in the car. An independent mechanic ran the diagnostic and said it could not be cleared. If I were to be in an accident, I would not be able to use this essential safety feature. Additionally, the MMI system that is used for making hands-free calls, mapping directions, and reading texts aloud randomly shuts off every 3-5 minutes. It says it is initializing, and you must hit three buttons to have it come back on. If I'm using maps or making a call, and this system shuts down, it becomes a distraction while driving. The dealership said it is a problem with this component overheating and restarting.

When the reboots happen, the screen goes black and key systems such as the backup camera, rear obstacle detection, and navigation, become unavailable until the reboot completes and the systems reload. I see numerous other Audi owners that have the same software and operating systems complaining about this. It seems Audi changed something that caused the connectivity to fail. The MMI randomly restarts, starting in March of 2025. This includes when you are reversing, and there is no camera mid-reverse, along with a complete screen shut down. There will be a clicking sound, then a restart on the MMI at any point, typically multiple times while driving. Then it will log you out, have multiple pop-ups, and say technical error at times (then reboot again). It is available for inspection, yes. The highest risk and safety hazard is mid-reversing anywhere (grocery parking lots, garages with cement columns, humans walking behind). It is also quite distracting while driving. My specific dealership didn’t fully test drive the car to recreate it and came back inconclusive, but many others are having this issue occurring at the same time with dealerships reproducing it. By Audi, it has been looked at. There were no warning signs, symptoms, or messages prior to this occurring in March of this year. *The problem with the vehicle is within the Multi-Media Interface system. The MMI will randomly restart while driving, without warning. *This random and frequent reset has lead to issues with following maps (i.e. missing turns, lost in traffic/while on the road) and while backing up (i.e. system turns off while using backup camera and safety sensors to back up). *The issue was reproduced when I had a diagnostic screening completed on 6/9/25 by an Audi Dealership. Through the diagnostic screening, it was found to be a software issue that needed to be updated. This was not covered by any warranty or plan. *The vehicle was inspected by the Audi Dealership in Pittsburgh, PA in November of 2024 and the diagnostic screen was done on 6/9/25. *There were no warnings of issues within the car, the MMI just restarts, randomly with no specific time intervals but happens frequently enough that it has become a safety issue while driving. This issue started to happen in February/March of 2025.

The MMI component randomly stops working. Over the past four years of driving this Audi the MMI would suddenly reboot itself only once or twice a year. Now for the past three months it tries to reboot itself once or twice a day! It's quite startling for the music to go silent and the screen goes black, the first few times this happened I thought the engine died too (that's scary). It even happens when I'm backing out of my garage, luckily there is never anybody behind me but what if I'm in the mall parking lot. When the MMI reboots itself about half of the time it is similar to a conventional starting procedure, which isn't to bad but just annoying. Other times it wants you to log on as a "guest driver" or "registered driver hasn't been in the vehicle" or it even wants you to punch in a pin number on the key pad which I don't know. All this requires your concentration on the MMI and not on the road. I wish some one could inspect this and confirm my problems before I brought it to the dealer. If I brought my car to the dealer they would charge me for diagnostics and then say they "there is nothing wrong" or worse try to upsell me a whole new unit for mega dollars. I only drive about ten to fifteen miles a day so my time on the road is minimal but it only takes a moment of distraction to have an accident. While there haven't been any warning lamps or messages about the MMI problem there was another symptom to this problem. The control button on the center console and the thumb scroll wheel on the steering wheel had a very distinct delayed reaction. The volume would change 2-3 seconds after I used the knobs and even turn off 2-3 seconds after I hit the button on the console. I think this symptom started to occur before the MMI reboots. One more quirk, after the MMI reboots, the music from my USB drive will start to play not from when the MMI cut out but from when I started the car that morning. It starts to repeat the same songs. Thank You.

While backing up in reverse, the MMI screen/system will crash and reboot, and the backup camera will stop functioning. This will trigger an instrument panel safety alert and tone from the vehicle that the backup camera is not functioning (the MMI/entertainment screen will be blank). The system will then reboot. This issue also occurs while driving. The effect is random, and can happen multiple times during a short drive, or just once. Each time the system crashes, the screen goes blank, and then the system will reboot and restart a few moments later. This issue surfaced in March 2025. A local Audi dealer could not replicate the issue, but seemed to understand or be familiar with what I described. After a software update of the MMI system, the issue was not resolved. They have recommended a $4,000 part replacement that they cannot confirm will address or resolve the issue. This is unsafe. This can occur while driving in reverse. The issue started in February 2025 and the vehicle has been inspected by the Audi dealership (on 4/17/25), who applied an update at a cost of $185 which did not solve the issue), and they continue to claim there's nothing they can do since their OBD scans return no fault codes, even though there are numerous TSBs (filed with NHTSA) that point to available software updates that should be applied to address infotainment-related issues. This appears to be a widespread issue based on the numerous reports found on user forums online, affecting the same model year vehicles (for multiple examples, refer to [XXX]). It is also interesting that most of the users experiencing this issue, also report it starting around the same time (Jan/Feb 2025), and they all have similar software versions, and likely production dates. This should be considered a safety issue, as the reboots can happen in the middle of a reverse parking maneuver, and they render the backup camera and obstacle detection sensors completely inoperative until the system reloads. ID: 2090015BACK OVER PREVENTION: WARNINGS
The Multimedia Interface (MMI) infotainment system in my 2020 Audi A4 frequently and unexpectedly reboots during driving. Each reboot causes the display to go black, disabling essential safety features including the backup camera, rear obstacle sensors, navigation, and hands-free phone connectivity until the system fully reloads. Restoring operation requires manual interaction, such as entering a PIN and repeatedly using the touchscreen, which distracts the driver and creates unsafe conditions. This malfunction significantly jeopardizes safety, particularly while driving in reverse, as the abrupt loss of the backup camera and obstacle detection sensors occurs without warning, substantially increasing the risk of collision or pedestrian accidents. Additionally, during normal driving, the sudden reboots disable navigation guidance and hands-free phone operation, which are essential for compliance with state laws regarding distraction-free driving. The need for manual input to restore these functionalities causes further driver distraction, compounding the potential for hazardous situations. The issue initially appeared sporadically over a year ago but increased dramatically around February 2025, now occurring as often as every few minutes. Performing a factory reset provided no improvement. Many owners report identical problems on forums like AudiWorld and Reddit, specifically mentioning the early-2025 onset and similar software versions. Several related Technical Service Bulletins, including TSB 2067021, TSB 2076404, and TSB 2069112, suggest software updates to address infotainment malfunctions. My vehicle underwent scheduled maintenance at an authorized Audi dealer in December 2024; no MMI abnormalities were reported then. Due to the sudden and unexpected nature of these system reboots and the disabling of critical safety and compliance functions, this defect should be recognized as a significant safety risk requiring immediate corrective action from Audi.

The problem is increasing in frequency. I took it back to the dealer on 4/16 where the only thing they could find via codes was a faulty a/c component. After searching online for a solution, I arrived at several reddit threads with other 2020 audi a4 drivers experiencing similar issues at the end of February. The thread is listed below. The MMI (multi-media interface) often restarts unexpectedly while driving, causing the display to go black and disabling essential features like the backup camera, rear sensor alerts, navigation, and hands-free phone connectivity. When this occurs, the system demands user interaction—such as re-entering a PIN (if one is configured) and repeatedly pressing the interface—to restore functionality. These interruptions can be particularly distracting, as they occur without warning and pull the driver’s focus away from the road. In most cases, drivers end up addressing the issue while parked, typically right after turning on the vehicle. This issue started in October-November 2024. This problem raises safety concerns, particularly when the system restarts during reverse parking, temporarily disabling both the rearview camera and obstacle detection sensors until the MMI reloads. Furthermore, these unexpected reboots shut down navigation functions and demand several user interactions to bring the system back online—creating a dangerous distraction while driving. With many states enforcing hands-free driving laws that rely on integrated, dash-mounted systems for compliance, the loss of functionality due to these reboots directly undermines a driver’s ability to meet those legal requirements. Numerous reports on online user forums suggest that this issue is widespread and affects the same model year vehicles.

MMI shuts off while driving every day. My car started doing an annoying thing where while driving the MMI randomly shuts off and reboots. I’ve tried everything I can think of to both replicate it and stop it but nothing has worked. I typically have my iPhone plugged in and Apple CarPlay on with Google maps running. It does it when I have it that way, it does it when I don’t have my phone connected either. I also can’t predict when it’ll do it. When it reboots I sometimes get “The selected user has not been used in this vehicle for an extended period of time. Please enter the myAudi user information again. This requires you to switch to the guest user.” When I switch to guest it does the same thing.

The issue started in February 2025 and the vehicle has been inspected by the Audi dealership (on 3/10.25), who verified the concern and attempted a factory reset (which did not solve the issue), and they continue to claim there's nothing they can do since their OBD scans return no fault codes, even though there are numerous TSBs (filed with NHTSA) that point to available software updates that should be applied to address infotainment-related issues. This appears to be a widespread issue based on the numerous reports found on user forums online, affecting the same model year vehicles (for multiple examples, refer to https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a4-b9-platform-discussion-212/mib3-2020-mmi-rebooting-spontaneously-2020-a4-3082501/ ). They also impact safety on the highway, as the reboots completely disable the navigation screens, and require multiple user input to restore, while driving. I have also filed a case with Audi Customer Experience (as many other customers have for this issue) and the number is 06788106, opened on 4/23/25, and I'm still pending for a satisfactory resolution. Relevant TSB numbers include: TSB 2067021, TSB 2076404, TSB 2069112.

AUDI MMI (Multimedia Infotainment system) is frequently malfunctioning without any indicators and immediately rebooting. This disrupts and distracts the driver, as it can happen randomly at any point of the drive. As not only does the reboot take several minutes, taking down all NAV/SOUND that was previously on, it requires user input to clear the error window that appears after the reboot. At times, the error windows even requires user input of a PIN mid drive in order to regain full access to the MMI. This issue is reproducable and various forums and other users have identified the common variable of all of us being son VERY old MMI software version and all occuring on MY2020 A4/A5 vehicles. Myself an other driver complaints know our MMI software version is on CL32 (Version 3243 or 3281) yet, the latest software version is already on CL35. This issue has started appear most frequently in Feb/March 2025, which is consistent with other user's complaints. The vehicle has been inspected and there are no issues with battery, engine, or otherwise. I have tried various debug including complete factory reset of MMI and not using any bluetooth connection, but issue still appears. Independent mechanic also belives it is a software issue. There has been various TSBs issued as an overall fix to the MMI (newest being 2076404_3 in 2025) via software update. However, even though these are highly impacted issues to the vehicle and pose as a danger to the driver, AUDI dealership is requiring diagnostics service fee for an intermittent and reproducable issue in addition to a large fee for the work. It is a software update as the fix supposedly, yet they will charge $1k for this to be done, and it is unclear if it will fix the issue as they may claim it is a 1 off user, despite multiple complaints from many drivers. This is not a comfort issue but is a safety issue since it requires active engagement from the driver, it is a dangerous and distracting issue.

MMI (infotainment), and the dashboard screen will turn off randomly and reboot. This is incredibly dangerous as it turns all sound off, and driving visuals like directions, and freezes or reboots, not where you last had it but from a different check point. Audi dealership said there was nothing they could do , after doing 2 software updates.
