2017 AUDI A3 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2017 AUDI A3 has 2 complaints and 3 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to engine starting failures and electrical system malfunctions. One complaint involves a fault leading to a no-start condition linked to the mechatronic unit prone to failure near 60,000 miles. Another complaint details a defect in the Vehicle Electrical System Control Module J519 causing multiple vehicle functions to fail including interior lights and dashboard display dimming.

Common Issues
  • Engine no-start. The internal combustion motor fails to start due to a defective mechatronic unit, which often requires replacement with an upgraded part.
  • Mechatronic unit failure. This component tends to fail around 60,000 miles, affecting multiple vehicles in 2016 and 2017 model years without an issued recall covering it.
  • Electrical system fault. The Vehicle Electrical System Control Module J519 failure disables interior lights, heated seats, and causes the dashboard and navigation screen to become too dim to read in daylight.

Three recalls affect the 2017 AUDI A3, addressing fuel system integrity and front passenger air bag systems. These recalls target components critical to vehicle safety and emission compliance.

Recalls
  • Fuel system suction pump. NHTSA Recall 24V110000 affects 261,257 vehicles including 2015-2017 Audi A3 models. A faulty suction jet pump seal in the fuel tank may cause fuel to leak into the evaporative emissions system and potentially out of the charcoal canister. This fuel leak increases the risk of fire. Dealers will replace the suction pump free of charge. There is no Do Not Drive or Park Outside advisory for this recall.
  • Passenger air bag sensor mat. NHTSA Recall 21V198000 covers 153,152 vehicles including 2017 Audi A3. The passenger occupant detection system may deactivate the passenger air bag even when the seat is occupied. This increases injury risk in the event of a crash. Dealers replace the PODS sensor mat and update the control module free of charge. No Do Not Drive advisory applies.
  • Passenger air bag control module. The same NHTSA Recall 21V198000 also addresses the PODS control module as part of the repair. It is included with the sensor mat replacement to restore proper air bag function. Free repairs are provided and no driving restrictions are issued.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs or unresolved safety recalls should consider their rights under their state’s lemon law. Persistent defects impacting safety or vehicle operation warrant consultation with qualified legal counsel specializing in consumer protections.

POWER TRAIN

Car throws P2884 and the internal combustion motor will not start. The issue is gone into detail here: [XXX] recommendation is swapping out mechatronic unit for the upgraded unit. Since the unit is prone to failure this really should be a recall. It happens on all cars 2016/2017 years right around 60k miles.
