2016 AUDI A3 Complaints and Recall Information
The 2016 AUDI A3 has 10 complaints and 4 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report failures of the mechatronic unit within the transmission causing erratic gear shifts and loss of gears. There are also multiple issues related to the passenger air bag system, including warning light illumination and malfunctions preventing air bag deployment.
Common Issues
- Mechatronic unit failure. The transmission’s integrated control unit often fails, affecting gear shifts, clutch engagement, and hydraulic pressure.
- Erratic gear shifting. Sudden jerking, delayed engagement, or refusal to shift gears occurs, leading to unsafe driving conditions.
- Limp mode activation. Transmission defaults to a single gear, limiting acceleration and braking responsiveness.
- Loss of gears. Drivers report the transmission losing reverse or multiple forward gears, increasing collision risks during parking or low-speed maneuvers.
- Diagnostic confirmation. Dealers confirm issues through fault codes and test drives showing harsh shifting and transmission warnings.
- Passenger air bag sensor failure. The front passenger seat air bag sensor fails, illuminating the warning light and disabling the air bag system.
- Passenger air bag malfunction. The air bag may not activate even when the passenger seat is occupied.
- Rear wiper hose clogging. The hose clogs frequently, preventing rear window fluid spray; replacements and cleaning provide only temporary relief.
- Rearview camera failure. The camera stops functioning abruptly, and dealer troubleshooting is costly.
- Passenger Occupancy Detection System fault. The system malfunctions causing safety system warnings and disabling air bag deployment.
There are four recalls for the 2016 Audi A3 affecting fuel system components and air bag systems. Recalls involve risks of fuel leaks, inflator explosions, and air bag deactivation due to occupant detection errors.
Recalls
- Fuel system suction pump (24V110000). A defect in the fuel tank suction jet pump seal affects 261,257 vehicles, causing fuel leaks that increase fire risk. Dealers will replace the suction pump free of charge. This recall expands and replaces a previous one. No "Do Not Drive" advisory issued.
- Passenger air bag inflator module (22V543000). Affecting 1,216 vehicles, the inflator may explode or deploy improperly during a crash, risking injury or death. Dealers replace the front-passenger air bag module at no cost. No "Do Not Drive" advisory issued.
- Passenger occupant classification sensor (21V198000). The system may malfunction and disable the passenger air bag even when the seat is occupied, elevating injury risk. Dealers replace the sensor mat and update the control module free of charge. No "Do Not Drive" advisory issued.
- Passenger air bag on-off switch assembly (21V198000). Linked to the occupant detection issue, this recall covers the same 153,152 vehicles and includes the same repairs and risks. The fix involves sensor replacement and software updates at no charge. No "Do Not Drive" advisory issued.
Owners with repeated transmission failures, safety system malfunctions, or unresolved recall repairs may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a qualified attorney can help in understanding those rights.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain front-wheel drive 2015-2020 Audi A3 Sedan, 2015-2019 Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, 2018 Golf Sportwagen GP, 2018-2019 Golf Sportwagen A7, 2015-2017 Golf Sportwagen, 2015-2020 Golf GTI, and 2015-2020 Golf A7 vehicles. Due to a problem with a suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and possibly leak out of the charcoal canister.
Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2016 Audi TT Roadster, TT Coupe, S3 Sedan, R8 Coupe, A3 Sedan, A3 Etron, A3 Cabriolet, 2016 Golf Sportwagen, Golf R, Golf GTI, Golf A7, and E Golf vehicles. During air bag deployment, the front passenger air bag may explode or deploy improperly.
Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking occupants, resulting in serious injury or death. An improper air bag deployment may not properly restrain the occupant, increasing their risk of injury in a crash.

AIR BAGS:ON-OFF SWITCH ASSEMBLY
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Audi S3 Sedan, A3 Sedan, 2016-2018 A3 Etron, 2017-2020 RS3 Sedan, and 2015-2019 A3 Cabriolet vehicles. The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may malfunction and switch off the passenger air bag even when the seat is occupied.
Risk: A deactivated passenger air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash.

The rearview camera is failed. Yes I can have an inspection done. Yes, dealer confirmed that camera is failed but wanted hundreds of dollars to troubleshoot. Has not been inspected by police or insurance. No it just stopped working one day.

The rear wiper hose is consistently getting completely clogged so that no fluid comes out when the spray mechanism is engaged. The dealership has replaced it for a fee two or three times. At the last service they told us they cleaned it and did not charge a fee. However, within two months it was clogged again. I have noticed that the issue is more likely to occur after (intentionally or accidentally) using the rear window defroster. I am therefore wondering whether the hose is made of a plastic that is too soft, causing it to change shape as a response to the defroster heat.

The contact owns a 2016 Audi A3. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the front passenger’s seat air bag sensor had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V198000 (Air Bags). The air bag warning was illuminated approximately one and a half years later. The vehicle was returned to the dealer who informed the contact that the repair was no longer covered under warranty. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a claim was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.

The **mechatronic unit** (integrated into the S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission) is the primary component that fails. This unit controls gear shifts, clutch engagement, and hydraulic pressure within the transmission. Common failure points include: - Internal electronic control module (ECU) faults. - Malfunctioning solenoids or pressure valves. - Software glitches or calibration errors. **2. Safety Risks** Mechatronic failure poses significant safety risks: - **Erratic Gear Shifts**: Sudden jerks, delayed engagement, or refusal to shift gears could lead to loss of vehicle control, especially in traffic or during overtaking . - **Limp Mode**: The transmission may default to a single gear (e.g., 3rd gear), severely limiting acceleration and braking responsiveness . - **Complete Gear Loss**: Loss of reverse or multiple forward gears increases collision risks during parking or low-speed maneuvers . --- **3. Confirmation by Dealers/Service Centers** Dealers and independent specialists can reproduce and confirm the issue through: - **Diagnostic Scans**: Fault codes like "implausible gear ratio," "valve electrical faults," or "clutch adaptation limits" often indicate mechatronic failure . - **Physical Testing**: Symptoms such as harsh shifting, RPM fluctuations, or transmission warnings (e.g., flashing PRNDS lights) are observable during test drives . - Audi has issued **Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs)** for related transmission issues, though the 2016 A3 e-tron’s mechatronic unit isn’t part of a formal recall.
